DISASTER SUPPORT

CONCORDIA PLAN SERVICES sends assurances of their prayers & concerns for those affected by the raging wild fires.  Here are several important tips for LCMS workers that have Concordia Health Plan (CHP) and need assistance.

  1. For workers in the CHP PPO options: Express Scripts has implemented emergency procedures for patients in the disaster areas needing a prescription.  The Refill-Too-Soon Edits (rejection notices) for members in the county of Ventura have been lifted.  These emergency procedures will be in effect until November 4, 2009.
  2. Because employers and workers who are directly affected by community-wide disasters sometimes need special help to cope with added stressors, the Employee Assistance Program is ready to help – either through counseling or other available resources.

Specifically the Disaster Resource Center provides LCMS employers, who are members in the Concordia Health Plan, and their workers with disaster-related information and links to resources to help them through this time of need.

To access the workers’ Disaster Resource Center, go to: www.cignabehavioral.com and locate “Members” and then click on “More” under the “Find Resources and Information” menu. The Disaster Resource Center is located at the top/middle section of the page. (http://apps.cignabehavioral.com/web/basicsite/consumer/consumer.jsp)

Employers seeking help through the Disaster Resource Center should go to www.cignabehavioral.com and click on “Benefits Managers.” Under the “Find Reporting and Other Tools” menu, click on “More.” The Disaster Resource Center is located at the top/middle of the page. (http://apps.cignabehavioral.com/web/basicsite/professional/professional.jsp)

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF welcomed author and Wall Street Journal correspondent Roger Thurow at a book signing event at its headquarters in the Lutheran Center on September 24, 2009. Thurow is the co-author of Enough: Why the Worlds Poorest Starve in an Age of Plenty. Enough presents a sobering, yet challenging report on world hunger—that it is preventable and that we can do something about it,” said LWR president John Nunes.  Thurow and fellow Journal reporter Scott Kilman teamed up to document the factors that contribute to chronic hunger in our world, and offer practical solutions and steps each of us can take to be part of the movement to end hunger in our time.  Thurow called chronic global hunger, “a crime of neglect” and described looking into the eyes of starving people as a “disease of the soul.” Pointing to the media’s lack of coverage on global hunger, Thurow noted that the number of people who die every day from hunger is roughly equivalent to 60 jumbo jets crashing every day, yet those deaths go largely unreported.  “Battling world hunger has always been a priority at Lutheran World Relief and Roger Thurow’s visit comes at a great moment for our organization,” added Nunes. “With a bold mission, a clear vision and solid values supporting us, we too hope to inspire people to act boldly in favor of change.”

THE REV. DR. JON DIEFENTHALER, President of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod Southeastern District, has officially joined the Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Board of Directors.  Diefenthaler has been President of the Southeastern District since 2003. Diefenthaler attended Concordia College in Milwaukee, Concordia Senior College in Fort Wayne, In., and Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. LUTHERAN HOUR MINISTRIES is currently doing research in the area of women’s ministry with the goal of answering two questions:
1.  Is a women’s ministry effort needed in the LCMS?
2.  If the answer to question one is yes, can LHM, in partnership with the LWML, help meet the need for effective women’s ministry?
At this time, LHM is conducting an LCMS Women’s Survey:
o To be completed by women in LCMS congregations
o CLICK HERE: http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/survey.zgi?p=WEB229MVCKMAU9 to complete this survey.
You may be thinking, “It’s obvious why LWML would be working on this project, they are always seeking ways to serve God, women, and the Church. But, why would LHM (also known as the International Lutheran Laymen’s League) be concerned with women’s ministry?”
Lutheran Hour Ministries is a powerful media organization using radio, video, and Internet resources to reach people in today's culture in creative and relevant ways. This is evidenced by the success of their latest endeavor, the Men’s NetWork, which provides high-quality DVD Bible studies and other tools to congregations and men for free at www.lhmmen.com.  With the Spirit’s guidance, and working together, LHM and LWML have the potential to be of great service to congregations in the area of women’s ministry, provided the need for such service exists.  For more information on this research project, please contact Faith Spelbring, LHM’s manager of United States Ministries Program Research and Development, by clicking here Faith.Spelbring@lhm.org , or calling 1.800.944.3450, ext. 4209
